Sophie Mjatta 24, is an albino young lady who hails from the village, coastal part of Dar es Salaam. She
has gone through life as a traumatized girl because society views her as an outcast. She was born with a
twin sister Salma, who was also an Albino. The community saw this act of God as a curse and Salma was
killed at infancy. Sophie was cursed and considered a nobody for the rest of her life. One who was not
allowed to participate in any activity or associate with the other villagers. Her role was simple, to live
and await death. Sophie has fallen in love with Iddi 26, a primary school teacher. The two lovebirds have
been secretly seeing each other for almost one year now. Before they know it, Sophie is pregnant and
their relationship becomes public knowledge. The community is outraged at how Iddi can go against
their beliefs. He is then beaten silly for trying to bring a curse to the whole community and
Sophie is forced to abort the baby to save the community a curse from the forefathers.
After the shame and embarrassment Sophie has brought to the community and family, Sophie’s father
sells off their daughter to a rich politician man in Mombasa, Kenya. The rich man Mr. Anderson Mweri is
a popular politician who is vying for the Governor’s seat. His witchdoctor has prescribed to him to get an
albino person to be used as a sacrifice so as to enhance the chance of the politician being elected as
governor. Mr. Anderson Mweri and his wife Juddy have spent a fortune on acquiring Sophie and are
positive that she will make a good sacrifice to appease the gods to giving them the political success they
so want. The Mweri’s have been married for the last fifteen years but have not been able to conceive a
child. This has been a slight blow to their public life. The Doctor has told them to try considering getting
a surrogate mother. Being embarrassed to acquire a surrogate mother in public because this is a new
concept in Africa. The couple opt for their slave, the sacrifice, Sophie who is secretly lying in their
dungeon awaiting her day at the altar of the witchdoctor, to be their surrogate mother. Iddi travels all the way from Dar es Salaam to Kenya, picking bits and pieces tracing the footsteps of the people who
bought his lover. The day he finally gets to meet Mr. Anderson and finds Sophie. Iddi is heartbroken
because Sophie is treated like a slave, she is fatigued and weak.
